COATING REFLECTANCE

The counterfeiting of electronic components has become a real danger in recent years and the electronic industry needs to find a solution to defend itself against it. One way to protect genuine electronic components from being counterfeit is to apply a thin UV cured coating and tag the chips. Infrared reflection spectroscopy with the help of chemometrics provides rapid and non-destructive solutions to detect this coated layer. Reflectance spectra are measured in the 900 to 1700 nm range and although the visual differences between the spectra are minimal, the use of chemometrics would permit the identification of coated from non-coated chips. Handheld NIR instrument scanning can be used to detect counterfeit components from the factory floor to the field.
